How Important Is Audio In Video?

Updated on September 21, 2021

Audio plays a huge role in the video, but not just any sound will do. You need to have the right sound, and the best way to do that is with a great microphone. Today's mics, functionally, are more advanced than ever ’ capable of capturing anything from an interview to an intimate acoustic set at a coffeehouse (or even your favorite Taylor Swift song). So make sure you're using the right mic for your projects.

That's right, old-fashioned professional microphones are still in style in 2021. They can range in price from a few hundred dollars to a couple thousand, or even more for high-end studio equipment. But for the average person who wants to record better audio, a decent mic should only cost $50-$300. Basic USB mics can be great options since they're easy to use and don't require any extra equipment ’ you just plug them into your computer and start recording.

If you want to go even cheaper than that, there are inexpensive lavalier mics you can clip to your shirt or tie so you can get sound from somebody speaking in front of the camera.

One of the options is the RODE smartLav+ Lavalier mic, which costs around $80 and works with either an iPhone or Android device. When it comes to audio, there are two main elements: content and quality. If you have good, clean audio that's easy to hear, then it doesn't really matter what kind of video equipment you're using.

On the other hand, if your sound is poor or inconsistent ’ you might have too much background noise, or the volume is too low ’ you can have all the bells and whistles of a top-of-the-line camera but it's pointless if your audio doesn't match.

Videos with great sound stand out from the crowd. People watch videos to hear something interesting or informative, and that won't happen if your audio is poor. Of course, professional-grade equipment isn't necessary for every video you make, especially if you're not producing content with a mass audience. But what matters most is to make sure you capture the best sound possible at all times no matter what type of mic or device you use.

The best way to get studio-quality sound is with a professional mic. This means you have to spend some money, but even the cheapest options are leaps and bounds better than smartphone built-in microphones or lavalier mics that come bundled with an inexpensive video camera ’ not to mention they often cost less than those sets of equipment anyway.

Here are some tips for recording audio for your video:

-Place the mic a few inches away from the subject. -Use a pop filter.

-Turn off all other sounds in the room.

-Place the mic at an angle to reduce sound coming from behind it.

-Watch out for air conditioning or heating vents.

-Mic an actor up close to capture subtle nuances of voice.

But as we mentioned before, you can also use your smartphone or a camera to record audio, just be sure you have it turned on. (It's not recommended though)

You might also want to consider using an external sound recorder to ensure you're picking up the best quality possible. In the video, sounds are just as important as pictures. Without good audio, your video will not be good. Don't let bad audio ruin your great video.

As you can see, sound is very important for video and there's a lot of different types. Make sure you use the right microphone to get the best sound possible.
