Updated on October 7, 2021

This blog post is for videographers who are wondering which type of video formats for social media to use. Currently, there are so much different types of video formats: MP4, MOV, WMV, AVI and etc. In fact, there are more than a dozen different video formats that are common to us all, but what are the most useful types of video formats for social media?

We researched and summarized the top 7 types of video formats for social media.

1. MP4 file format

MP4 is a digital multimedia format used to store video and audio, as well as carry metadata, and subtitles. MP4 is the most widely supported media format ever developed that is used across all devices from mobile phones to TVs. It also has a higher compression rate than other formats, which means it takes up less storage space in your device when you're uploading videos to social media platforms such as Facebook, Youtube, Snapchat, and Instagram, and many many more.

2. MOV file format

MOV is a computer file format for video, capable of storing digital video, audio, and other metadata. MOV is a typical video file format, like MP4, and can be recognized by most modern operating systems and various hardware devices such as cameras, camcorders, DVD players, mobile phones, and media players. In addition to these features, MOV is also widely used for social media. However, it is still not as popular as MP4, because MOV files are usually less compressed, and have a larger file size than MP4 files, which can result in longer upload times for your video.

3. WMV file format

WMV (Windows Media Video) is a video compression format developed by Microsoft, for use with its Windows operating systems and Xbox game consoles. This type of file can be played in both hardware and software players, but not all mobile devices or social media platforms support playing WMV format videos. For example, while Facebook and Youtube will support this type of format, Twitter, Instagram, and Tik Tok will not recognize this format.

4. AVI file format

AVI (Audio Video Interleave) is a Microsoft and IBM-developed standard for storing video, audio, and other multimedia content in files, popular with digital camcorders and media players such as QuickTime, VLC, Windows Media Player/Media Center, etc. However, due to its large file size which is not optimized for social media, it is not widely used for that purpose. Sites such as Facebook or Youtube still recognize AVI files, so you can use them without any conversion.

5. FLV (Flash Video)

FLV (Flash Video) is a flash file format used to deliver video over the Internet. It is widely used on streaming video websites, including YouTube, Dailymotion, and other sites. It is also recognized by Facebook. But, other social media platforms could have problems with this type of format.

6. WebM

WebM is an audio-video format designed to provide an open-source video compression technology for use with HTML5 video. The main BIG difference of this format is the size. The file size is smaller than any other format in the way that it maintains the quality and looks like a better format, allowing you to upload your video faster to your social media platforms. By choosing WebM Video Format for uploading your videos to websites, you can be sure all of them will play without any problem. However, WebM is not recognized by nearly all social media platforms, except YouTube.

7. MKV (Matroska)

MKV (Matroska) is a free and open video container format most commonly used to store high-definition video. It can also be used to store 3D video, subtitles, and various audio formats. Note: MKV stands for Matroska Video.

MKV file format is difficult to play and it requires software players with inbuilt codecs or media players plugins. Many of the sites do not allow uploading MKV files directly due to lack of plug-ins, so before uploading your video to any social media platform you should convert MKV videos into MP4 or MOV videos. However, Facebook still allows uploading MKV videos on their platform.

Conclusions

Overall, the MP4 file format - most versatile and clear video format for social media. If you want to post an HD, Full HD, or 4K of video on Facebook, Twitter, Whatsapp, or even your company's website, MP4 is your best choice.

Why? First of all, it is the most popular video type on Facebook and Twitter, with over 80% of online videos in MP4. So it can be easily recognized on any social network.

Second, MP4 has a high compression codec, which means a smaller video size and fast upload speed. YouTube supports all of the above 7 types of formats

So, which video format should you choose for social media? As for us, we suggest that the MP4 file format is definitely the best way to go. Not only does it run on both Windows and Mac OS X (and plays on most other systems), but it also is played on some platforms, like Facebook natively.
